A small green hill in the foothills of the Tien Shan, directly to the east of the city, Kok Tobe is an ideal place for taking a step back and admiring the cityscape in one sweeping vista. An old cable car, common in all ex-Soviet capitals, is situated just behind the Arman cinema on Dostyk, and drops you at the top of the hill. Here a small playground awaits you, complete with a mini-zoo – which features Uzbek fighting chickens and greedy goats – a roller-coaster from which you can admire the panorama and a wall of celebrity photos including Prince and Princess Michael of Kent (amongst others who have made it up here). It’s a great place for relaxing, too. The picturesque ‘Lover’s Parade’ is a nice spot for strolling, and The Grill (see Eat) is just the place for sipping an aperitif and watching the sun go down. Finally, don’t miss the unexpected statue celebrating The Beatles. Sit alongside your favourite band member on the bench and enjoy their classic songs playing in the background.
