Kunaev House Museum
Dedicated to the popular and long-standing Soviet Kazakh politician Dinmukhamed Kunaev, this free museum is situated within the house he lived in for many years. Most notably, he became First Secretary of the Communist Party in Kazakhstan in 1964 and remained in this position for 22 years. His removal from his post in 1986 triggered student demonstrations that became riots, with some protestors losing their lives in the fracas. The riots came to be known as Zheltoksan (meaning December in Kazakh), and embody Kazakhstan’s struggle for independence. In fact, Kunaev devoted the last years of his life to charitable works with a focus on promoting political reform.
