This lovely, shambling, funky former squat is a bit incongruous in Amsterdam, and feels that it should be in London’s Shoreditch, or Berlin’s old east. It’s part bar, part cinema, part performance space and almost always intriguing. There may be a New Orleans gumbo band playing, a screening of Starship Troopers (with explanations about the ironic subtext), or simply a night of well spun vinyl, but the crowd is typically quite knowingly hip and welcoming. The ‘bars’ in this narrow four storey building can be as simple an upturned wallpaper pasting table, but will typically be serving beer by the can, or mojitos from a tub. There remains a slightly anarchic feel to the place (the Nieuwe Anita was originally here illegally, and retains that sticky-floored, speakeasy feeling), and draws a similarly anarchic but easy-going crowd.
