This is the place that saw De Pijp begin to turn from a quiet, residential immigrant area into the more gentrified hot spot of bars and restaurants that it is today. Others have sprung up in a similar vein, but Kingfisher retains a prominent position in the pecking order of De Pijp bars. In keeping with the area, it’s hip and stylish, all done out with hints of kitsch and those bright red walls, complete with its lounge-bar feel. But, also in keeping with the area, it’s welcoming and relaxed and not too caught up in its own coolness. The terrace is great in summer but gets packed, as does the inside, all year round. There are bar snacks and a dish of the day on offer, but, as with all good bars, they also know how to mix a proper cocktail.
