Café de Jaren
This big, stylish cafe is probably best loved for its terrace, which gets so packed in summer that it looks like the guests might tip over into the canal. It offers a view over into the beginning of the RLD proper, but is suitably separated so that the more gormless stag groups never make it over. Inside, the high ceilings and mosaic tiles give a sense of some grandeur and airiness, and feel more appropriate to the Hotel de L’Europe next door than the slightly grubbier bits of de Wallen just over the water. The menu is simple and competently put together. Starters include a good smoked salmon with chicory, apple, pear salad and horseradish mayonnaise for ?7,50, mains are a few dishes of meat, pasta or vegetarian. A refreshing spot for a nibble and a drink before heading back into the throng.
