Hg2 : The Hedonist

Jimmy Woo’s

This very un-Amsterdam temple to ostentatious displays of wealth is the sister venue to the bar Suzy Wong’s (see separate review), and is, if anything, more glamorous. The interior has a similar east meets west vibe, throwing together old Saigon opium den and Renaissance France, and looks, at times, like a late 90s music video, or a convention centre for off duty models. The mystique the club endeavours to build begins at the door, with an inconsistent and hard to fathom entry policy that appears to be largely based on the whims of whoever is holding the magic clipboard, all of which is a tad incongruous in classless, down-to-earth Amsterdam. Once inside though (call for guest list, or to book a table – minimum of six people and two bottles), it’s all very glam and poseur-ish, and that’s just the staff. The drinks are expensive but well put together (the cocktails are particularly good) and music tends to be RnB and house, with dashes of funk and soul. This is a stylish venue, full of beautiful people, but just a tad up its own backside.
