Hotel Amrâth

At first sight, Hotel Amrâth, 500 meters from Central Station, looks more like Lord Sauron’s summer retreat than an inviting place to stay. But despite the spooky-looking outside, it has one of the most beautiful art deco interiors in Amsterdam. The building dates back to 1913, when it housed the offices of six shipping agencies. The directors wanted to represent Dutch seaborne successes in every single detail, resulting in a richly decorated interior full of nautical symbolism in marble and stained glass. In 2005, the building was restored and transformed into a five-star venue including a pool, two bars, a restaurant and a spa. The rooms at the front are the most spacious; they belonged to the shipping agency directors. The suite in the frontal tower is particularly mind blowing, with its three floors and a bathroom providing a 360 degree view across the city from the comfort of your tub. Compared to the suites, the other rooms are quite simple.
