Hg2 : The Hedonist

Hotel Okura

With 301 rooms, conference centres, four restaurants and two bars, a pool, health club and spa, the Okura is one of the biggest hotels in Amsterdam. Rooms on the lowest floors, where the view of the city is more limited, start at ?200, but if your budget stretches that far, there is the option of the 485 m² suite for ?10,000 per night. Wealthy guests can have the star chefs from the hotel’s restaurants, Yamazato and Ciel Blue (see reviews in Eat), cook a private meal in the large kitchen, or watch a movie in their own private cinema. The hotel’s location, between the centre and the business district of Zuid and the World trade Centre, attracts a largely business clientele. Being part of a Japanese chain, all rooms have a modern, tight, square design, and the latest hotel gadgets. For example, every bed has a remote control to open the curtains, turn on the TV or dim the lights, and there’s a TV in every bathroom. You can’t go wrong here in terms of comfort, but the style of the building feels dated and a tad impersonal.
