Intercontinental Amstel Hotel
The Amstel Hotel, sitting on the banks of the eponymous river, represents luxury in the most classic sense of the word. Since opening in 1867, it has been the Grande Dame of Holland’s hotels. Dutch ladies tell their girlfriends, blushingly, that they had a high tea here, but only a few can say they’ve ever enjoyed a full stay. This is the hotel where the Rolling Stones rent an entire floor, where Snoop Dogg hangs with his homeys and where U2 find rest when in Holland. The exterior is like a grand old English beach hotel, rather than something in the centre of a city. And inside, the luxury is similarly of a by-gone age. There’s a spa, a Michelin-starred restaurant, a more casual bar, a baby sitter and the suites even have a butler service, and it’s all accessible by boat if you happen to be passing through with a yacht. This hotel is top of the range in terms of both price and quality.
