Sofitel the Grand
Sitting on the border of the Red Light District, the Grand is one of the finest places to sleep in Amsterdam. The hotel combines modern luxury with style and history, in the oldest part of Amsterdam’s centre. The building dates back to the sixteenth century, serving as a convent, then the city hall before it was turned into a hotel in the early 90s. Though the building looks ancient, there is nothing old fashioned with the interior, thanks to a massive renovation, finished in early 2010. The hotel now includes 177 rooms, 52 brand new suites, a spa, pool, gym and the top-notch fish restaurant Bridges (see review in Eat). The design is modern chic, still honouring the old elements, like the framed windows and old wood of the doors and ceilings. The Grand is fit for any traveller who has something to spend, providing quality on all fronts.
