The Park Hotel, in between the Vondelpark and the Leidseplein, is a prime example of how a good refurbishment can fix many wrongs. The old incarnation was fusty and unwelcoming, with a dusty red carpet and heavy wooden furniture that said ‘state’ more than ‘stately’. When it re-opened in 2008, the Park had a crisp new look, full of 21st Century design flourishes, and has since attracted a younger crowd. Guests are welcomed in a large, breezy lobby, decorated with an Italian scooter, books, comfortable chairs, couches and modern fireplaces. All rooms have super comfortable mattresses, and a simple but tastefully designed bathroom where the weary can relax after a day of exploring. Momo, the hotel’s restaurant next door, offers unusual but tasty breakfasts, lunches and dinners.
