D’Vilff Vlieghen
Now, the ‘five flies’ might not sound like an enticing place to eat, but don’t let the name put you off. This is one of the few places where you can experience Dutch food that edges beyond extra ripe cheese or mysterious substances deep fried in breadcrumbs and slathered with mustard. There is a grand old feel to the place too – an almost museum-esque vibe, which encourages hushed chat, but does allow you to drift off into thoughts of the city in its Golden Age. The nine small, interconnected dining rooms all feel snug, and there are original Rembrandt sketches in the room named after him. The menu promises ‘new Dutch cuisine’, which might not mean much to many, but roughly translates as high-end dining with French influences and local ingredients. Worth investigating for its history, and a taste of some swanky Dutch flavour.
