Het Concertgebouw
Opened in 1888, this grand old concert hall is (according to its PR blurb) reckoned to be among the top three halls in the world for symphonic music acoustics (the others being equivalents in Boston and Vienna). Our own ear isn’t quite refined enough to judge, but the sound here does carry beautifully. It is the home of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and mixes up its classic symphonic menu with dashes of jazz and world music. Those keen to know more about the building itself can take tours on Sundays (midday to 1pm) and Monday (5pm to 6pm).
