Insomnia opened in early 2011 and provides a refreshing contrast to the otherwise polished world of Astana’s nightlife. Here, it’s all about the music and dancing without inhibition amongst a like-minded crowd. It’s best not to scrutinise the space itself too closely, as the club occupies what’s essentially an underground car park, but the rough ‘n’ ready aesthetic only adds to its gritty appeal. And the owners have invested cash where it counts, with a serious sound system and state-of-the-art light show plus a huge dance floor. The music, meanwhile, is a high-energy mix of house, rave and more commercial tunes with go-go and striptease shows providing a visual accompaniment. Prices are cheap to cater to a young and dynamic clientele, with entry and cocktails at 1,000 KZT and tables for a small group from 10,000 KZT. The neon sign in the entrance hall sums Insomnia up perfectly: ‘Nite Dancing: Astana Never Sleeps’.
