Hg2 : The Hedonist

Palace of Independence

The Palace of Independence is a relatively new building just opposite the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation. Opened in 2008, it was the idea of the President and its modern style is another example of the contemporary and sometimes futuristic aesthetic of architecture in Astana. It has a whole array of functions, with many political and international conferences being held here, and in 2010 it played host to the OSCE summit. The most interesting part is the model of Astana, which is a good way of seeing the city when it is too cold to visit on foot, while a multi-sensory 4D film about the city brings Astana to life. An art gallery is occasionally open, too – depending on what meetings are being held – but the number above is answered by English-speakers so you can call and check. A museum dedicated to the city’s history was under construction at the time of writing.
