Hg2 : The Hedonist

Ali & Nino Café

Named after the eponymous lovers in Kurban Said’s great masterpiece of Azeri literature, written in Germany, The Ali & Nino café and A&N book café are a pair of quiet havens off the bustling crowds of, respectively, Fountain Square and Nizami Street, that serve up excellent coffee and pastries and, in the case of the café especially, a very good light lunch. The café is opposite
the adults’ and children’s bookshops of the same name (and management) while the book café is located in the basement of the other branch of the bookshop itself. The café has been sensitively decorated in an elegant, period style to reflect the novel’s setting – the first years of the twentieth century, when Baku was at the height of its first oil boom. Literature geeks may even notice that the broken clock downstairs is set to 5.15, the precise time in the novel at which Ali meets his, well, that’d be telling.
