Hg2 : The Hedonist

Papillon

Entirely unrelated to daring escapes from Devil’s Island or to French lepidoptera, Papillon is a very pleasant café/restaurant/bar situated in the Molokan Gardens on the former site of the Shakespeare Pub (now round a couple of corners on Ali-Zadeh Street). The salon is a long room in a comforting shade of pinkish red, dominated by a Deco-style wave of pink recessed lighting, which does lend a certain fine, Frenchy feel, that is no doubt in part behind the concept and name. Small framed prints of street scenes and still lifes compound the effect and a relaxingly laid-back lounge soundtrack makes for a comforting and somehow discreet atmosphere. The seating is, in the main, in booths, the perfect place to share one of their killer desserts and gaze longingly into one another’s eyes, as many of the youngish crowd seem more than happy to do.
