Entering the 330 square metre, 10 room Imperial Suite at The Excelsior, it is no surprise that this is the suite of choice for Russian rock stars when they play Baku. This suite is so vast, even the hallway has its own hallway. Fabulous roll top chaise longues and silk-cano-pied day beds; glittering chandeliers and Deco statuettes abound – there’s even a baby grand piano (white, natch) for them to bang out their latest rock ballad. But fear not, for many of these features (piano excepted) are repeated, albeit on a slightly lesser scale, in the suites available to mere mortals. Perhaps surprising then that the standard rooms are done in such restrained, while still opulent, good taste. Also more than worth a mention is the fantastic Aura wellness centre – one of the most impressive hotel fitness centres we have ever seen.
