Hg2 : The Hedonist

Museum of Literature

The Museum of Literature is housed in the former Metropol Hotel, which was the Grand Hotel of Baku until it was closed down by the Soviets back in 1940, and is not to be confused with the new Metropol Hotel (see Sleep). Probably the most photographed building in Baku after the Maiden Tower, its facade, especially when lit up by night, with its alcoved statues of the greatsrnof Azeri literature is unmistakable and frankly stunning. The museum is dedicated to the great luminaries of what is a highly literary society and features room upon room of statues, portraits, manuscripts and artefacts relating to the literary greats of Azerbaijan, although many of the names will be unfamiliar to foreign visitors.
