Hg2 : The Hedonist

Mustafayev Art Museum

Housed in two buildings just down the hill from the Presidential Office – photography of which is strictly forbidden – and opposite the Filarmonia, the Mustafayev Museum houses a mixed bag of arts from across Europe. The lower of the two buildings is a nineteenth century Dutch oil mansion and is home to a not exactly awe-inspiring collection of minor works by some big name artists and is interesting more for the building’s interior, than any significant artistic treasures. The upper building – a former school – contains a more interesting collection of Azeri work and is home also to the odd travelling exhibition, such as a fascinating recent show of Oriental textiles in association with the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. In the courtyard behind are some bullet-ridden busts, rescued by chance from a Tbilisi scrapyard where they ended up after being shot up and looted by Armenian invaders in their original home of Shusha, the main town of the Armenian-occupied province of Nagorno Karabakh.
