Shirvanshah’s Palace
The stunning complex of the Shirvanshah’s Palace is the greatest cultural draw of the Old City and dates in the main from the 14th and 15th centuries. Incorporating the Shah’s palace, mausoleum, personal mosque and hammam, it is a stunning example of medieval Islamic architecture and home to some quite simply breathtakingly ornate Islamic carved stonework and tranquil courtyards. The central, vaulted hall is currently home also to a small portion of the impressive private collection of eccentric philanthropist Shahid Habibullayev’s amazing array of rescued and Azeri metalwork and other artefacts, all personally restored by Shahid himself. Among the collection is the personal phaeton of the Nobel family, rescued as an anonymous rusting hulk from a rubbish tip in Sheki. There are hopes that the collection of some 3,000 pieces will soon find its own home in a private museum.
