Reial Cercle Artístic
Surreal both in setting and experience, this permanent show is a wonderful dedication to one of Spain’s most famous artists and will excite fans and convert sceptics. If you can’t make it to the museum in his birthplace of Figueres for a Dali fix, this comes a close second. Befittingly set in the Gothic district, his oil paintings, drawings and sculptures fill every corner of the beautiful Cercle Artistica building. Behind his tiny bronze sculpture, “Surrealistic Angel”, head through sweeping red velvet curtains into what feels almost like a mausoleum for the great man himself. Tiny sculptures balanced upon stone and copper poles fill the room, and the walls are covered in photos of Dali on his deathbed, those taken while he filmed “Venus Dream” and his sculptures of Jesus (one of the main themes of the exhibit). Horses painted with crowns of thorns seem to be the natural progression of the show from the rooms dedicated to Jesus, and each room has at least one epic bronze sculpture. The range of mediums and the sheer size of so much of his work makes this a truly fascinating experience; one of the best exhibits in Barcelona, you might need two trips to take it all in.
