From the owner of 3+1 Bedrooms, the immaculate minimalist restaurant Paper near Nanluoguxiang epitomizes the trendy Gulou neighborhood. Look carefully on the gray concrete wall outside because the entrance is easy to miss. Once inside you will notice that the blonde wood floor is the only surface that isn’t entirely white, from the long lacquer table to the vases of calla lilies. The modern Chinese cuisine uses as little oil as possible in all of the 16 rotating courses of its RMB 150 set menu. There are Southeast Asian influences in the dainty morsels of stir-fried eggplant and tiger prawns in tea leafs that keep coming until you are more than satisfied. The lotus root salad with fresh parsley and apple-vinegar dressing is delightfully zippy. After dinner you can linger on the sofas in the loft-like area upstairs while sipping on their signature lychee martinis.
