Hg2 : The Hedonist

Music Hall

Music Hall is one of the few places in Beirut where you can watch six or seven bands in one night as you eat a luscious dinner and drink bottles of blue-label alcohol. Formerly the Starco Cinema, the space was taken over in late 2003 by record-label owner and music entrepreneur Michel Elefteriades, who created a sort of cabaret-show environment. A huge bar at the top overlooks the stage at the far end, with descending levels of sofas and tables, and seating beneath it. Each night features around six different acts: perhaps legendary Lebanese-Arabic singers Tony Hanna and his Gypsy Band or the octogenarian tarab queen Nahawand, the Palestinian Chehade Brothers, playing their mix of oud and gypsy funk, or the extremely camp Lebanese male belly-dancer Mosbah. Music Hall is packed with people of all ages who are up for a night of original and different music and performance. Although it gets cheesy at times, the atmosphere is always fun.
