Hg2 : The Hedonist

Cocteau

This upmarket Beirut restaurant, serving decent French food, is named after avant-garde French writer, poet and film-maker Jean Cocteau, a frequent visitor to Lebanon, and specifically the ruins of Baalbek, which he adored. rn

The décor is a melange of subtle beiges and creams with touches of extravagance, notably bottles of champagne dressed by Jean Paul Gaultier in red rubber corsets, and Cocteau-bilia, including a portrait of the man himself above the bar complete with lines of his poetry. The lampshades on the ceiling are made to look like a bookshelf stacked with Cocteau’s works.

A relatively affluent clientele populate the refectory-style tables, which can be fun if you’re in the mood to get to know your neighbours, but not the sort of place for a night of whispered romance.
