It’s well known that Kumpelnest 3000, this quirky shoe-box sized Berlin bar is strictly for ‘the last drink of the night’. Principally, because after a few cocktails the garish shag pile carpet and mirrored walls blur into one confusing mass of colour. Longtime barman Reinhardt has taken it upon himself to decorate the place in his ‘downtime’. His latest additions include a ceiling decorated with photocopies of Peter Pan rugs and a home-made mobile of a naked man floating through different household scenes (the backdrop changes each week). The photo of an old woman above the bar is the person who Reinhardt jokingly refers to as his boss. Having opened 21 years ago, Kumpelnest has witnessed a great deal of change. In the early post reunification days, the bar would regularly stay open well into the following afternoon. These days it tends to close at 5am in the week and 10am at weekends. Turn up early for sedate music and late if you like it banging.
