The owners of Sanatorium like to think of it as a wellness centre for those sick of reality, but on a Friday night this Berlin bar could be mistaken as a clinic for the mentally insane. An environment that fits perfectly with this peculiar stretch of the Karl-Marx-Allee, a hospital theme pervades, with latex surgeon suits hanging from the ceiling and several curtained operating areas. Even the cocktail menu corresponds to the periodic table (which can be downloaded from the website). Thankfully, the atmosphere isn’t quite so sanitized, although the music can be loud and electronic. Strangely enough, Sanatorium is a peaceful choice for a relaxing daytime coffee and cake. Owner Stefan also runs a small guest house above the bar – at present only three double rooms costing €35-45 a night (see website for details). Each one is designed differently, but along similar lines to the bar. Somebody pass the morphine.
