Hg2 : The Hedonist

Weinerei

A Berlin wine bar with a social conscience, the Weinerei collective is a breath of fresh air on the Berlin bar scene. Just like Naomi Klein’s classic book there is ‘no logo’ outside this bar and very much in the spirit of her ethics, this is an egalitarian enterprise. Inside, there’s no bar as such – just a table littered with wine bottles. Guests are invited to pour their own drinks and payment is discretionary. In the absence of any cash register, drinkers simply toss coins into a glass bowl. There are no set prices, but as a rough guide we recommend €3 for a glass of wine. A simple three-course meal is also served from 8pm (again, pay for as much as you’ve had) and for breakfast a selection of pastries can be nibbled. It’s a concept that relies wholly on trust, but one that has been extremely successful and there are several other branches of Weinerei, most of which prefer to be discovered via word of mouth rather than guidebook recommendations. A living room interior has been cobbled together from flea market finds and one room even resembles an old-fashioned train carriage. Only friends of the Weinerei are welcome, although in truth the offer of friendship extends to everyone.
