Hg2 : The Hedonist

Ungeheuer

Its name may mean “monster” in German, but there’s nothing monstrous about Ungeheuer’s edgy décor, friendly counter staff, and languorous weekend breakfasts. Located in Neukölln, that nexus of Berlin cool, the café attracts a young and studiously hip clientele with its gallery of oversized paintings by local artists and other striking decorative elements (a gold-painted branch hangs suspended from the ceiling like a mobile). In the mornings, bleary-eyed party people pour in for the excellent cappuccinos, bountiful breakfast plates of eggs, cheese, fruit, cured meat, and currant-topped yogurt pots, and in the evenings the café turns into a laidback, neighbourhood bar. At any time of day, there’s guaranteed to be legions of laptop users, soaking up the atmosphere and taking advantage of the free Wi-Fi.
