Birthdays are at the heart and soul of this Berlin club, Geburtstags-klub so-called because of the papier-mâché birthday cake that sits atop the club’s humble entrance. Previously a storage warehouse for the owner’s lighting business, inspiration for the club was born out of a friend’s birthday party there. The celebration is still taken seriously and birthday boys and girls are able to waltz in free. Long-standing reggae night Callaloo Club takes place on a Monday, while the monthly famous gay party Irrenhouse (translated as ‘madhouse’) is not for the easily offended; drag shows and naked dancing are not unusual. The club can be found at the end of a scruffy courtyard. Events vary drastically and since it’s quite a way out, it’s best to choose your party with care.
