Maria Am Ostbahnhof
This Berlin nightclub, Maria Am Ostbahnhofset, in industrial minimalism doesn’t get much better than at this waterside warehouse underneath the Schillingbrücke. Maria is opposite the Ibis Hotel in what looks like an abandoned spray-paint abused building, but the interior is large, funky and full of bars and dance-floors. The super-size sound system makes it a great location for live events and daring club nights. As is typical of clubs in Berlin, the music policy depends largely on the party being held – but the playlist in Maria is generally electronic and progressive. The Transmediale festival also takes place here every year. When filled to capacity Maria is the best warehouse rave in town; when empty, it’s just a cold open space. During summer, the grassy riverbanks are littered with bodies and beer cans. The crowd is mixed, but only those willing to put up with surface dirt and grime can survive. Come here when the queues for nearby Berghain are too long to consider.
