SO36, one of Berlin’s major gay and lesbian nightclubs, is also a definitive Kreuzberg phenomenon. With a punky, anything-goes spirit, there’s an air of spontaneity about this place that’s reflected in an eclectic programme that ranges from Turkish drag nights, punk and soul bands to house and techno. The two huge rooms inside are generally packed with an assortment of races and sexualities. Selected Saturdays feature the famous Gayhane (with a Homoriental theme), with the last Saturday of the month given over to House of Halay, a lesbian and gay event with belly-dancing trannies, a midnight show, Turkish hits and DJ beats. Each Sunday Café Fatal rounds the weekend off with dancing, varieté and Schlager, but then it all gets going again on Monday with the ‘Verified’ rave-up.
