Flags from all over the world flutter in the grand courtyard of this business-friendly five-star hotel in Berlin. In summer, tables are set out under the veranda within view of the Landwehr canal. Inside, the hotel is still glowing from its recent makeover. Not only was the lobby completely remodelled by star hotel designer Alexandra Champalimaud, but the entire hotel was given an overhaul. The 352 newly renovated rooms (and 39 luxurious suites), still vary considerably, but are far more upmarket and comfortably furnished than before. Harry’s New York Bar remains a popular, if somewhat tacky, nightspot well within stumbling distance of bed; and there’s been all change with the hotel restaurants: Vivo has become Eck, serving traditional German cooking, and the Ellipse Lounge, with a more international flavour, has opened. Alongside this are three new saunas and a swimming pool in the Triangle Health & Spa.
