Part of the luxurious Palace Hotel, First Floor is a French restaurant and a destination in its own right for gourmet diners in Berlin. Opened in 1993, the restaurant was awarded its first Michelin star in 1997 and chef Matthias Diether has retained it by serving consistently superb French cuisine. The opulent interior mirrors the style of the hotel; think upper-class comfort with the occasional flamboyant swirl. Wood-panelled walls and hand-woven carpets are matched to electric blue upholstery. Private salons host exclusive dinner parties and the bar provides seductive aperitifs to the monied West Berlin diners. The largely French menu diversifies into Middle European classics and the occasional international fusion. The on-hand sommelier guides novices through the 800 strong, to-die-for wine list. First Floor is a triumph of style and substance.
