Hg2 : The Hedonist

Lode & Stijn

The creation of Lode & Stijn in Berlin’s Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg district just goes to show that great things really do come to those who wait. The culinary partnership of Dutch chefs Lode van Zuylen and Stijn Remi, while long awaited, was well worth it; the stars aligned and these two gastro soulmates were able to throw their lots in together and wow Berliners with their bitterballen. For those not in-the-know, bitterballen are deep-fried meaty Dutch treats, here served in a rustle of brown paper with homemade mayo. And they’re amazing. Crispy, intensely savoury, and utterly moreish.

But they’re not the only standouts on the menu by any means. There’s everything from homebaked sourdough and butter to beef tartare on toast with Romaine lettuce and aged Gouda to look forward to. One day there might be a salad of Hugenotten goats cheese from Capriolenhof, with celeriac root, hazelnuts, and vanilla. The next North Sea flounder with thyme and shrimp sauce. Or the ethereal strawberries, sorrel and milk ice cream.

The menu shifts with the seasons, meaning you might encounter something entirely different on your visit, but it’s sure to be some of the best food you’ve had in a while. With its relatively unadorned white walls, drop lights, and wooden furniture, Lode & Stijn errs on the simple in terms of decor, but it’s much the better for it. Much like the food, it doesn’t need to shout about its philosophy or its deliciousness – it’s just great.
