Hg2 : The Hedonist

Berliner Ensemble

This Berlin theatre was made famous by its association with the father of German theatre, Bertolt Brecht. In 1949 he and Helene Weigel founded the Berliner Ensemble, which moved into the Theater am Schiffbauerdamm in 1954; Brecht’s Threepenny Opera was staged here for the first time in 1928. Actor and director Max Reinhardt (artistic director 1903-06) also produced plays for the Berliner Ensemble. German director Claus Peymann is now at the helm and you can expect modern productions from Austrian and German writers alongside Brecht and Shakespeare. The building, built in 1892, is nothing short of stunning
