Hg2 : The Hedonist

Philharmonie

This striking piece of modern architecture is easily the most famous concert hall in Berlin and home to the world renowned Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. The shimmering golden structure was designed by Hans Scharoun and opened in 1963. The acoustics are incredible in front of the orchestra, where seats are accordingly the most expensive. Elsewhere they can vary. The Orchestra was founded in 1882 and has been led by some of the world’s finest conductors; it’s currently in the hands of British innovator Sir Simon Rattle. Aside from more traditional compositions, he has introduced work from contemporary composers and collaborations with jazz artists and improvisers. About 100 performances are given throughout the year (except July) and a few tickets are often available directly before each show. Tickets can otherwise be difficult to secure and should be booked up to eight weeks in advance. The building also has a smaller hall, the Kammermusiksaal.
