Bar 878 is one of those ‘ring-the-doorbell’ hideouts, playing the role of the speakeasy bar disguised from the prohibition police.

However, the state-of-the-art cash till is an obvious giveaway – 878 is an above-board business and actually one of the more sanitized bars for a late-night get-together in this part of town. The building, formerly a carpenter’s workshop, hosts upwards of 50 drinkers, all revelling in the bar’s ‘hidden’ image.

Crucially, 878 stays open during January, which has ensured it a dedicated following of cocktail fanatics who quench their thirst here throughout the year. The highly skilled barmen impress the most fervent cocktail addicts with their own concoctions (although steer clear of their ‘Fernet Branca’ peppered vodka and peach mix).

Dine at Thymus, follow with cocktails at 878 and then head on for beers at Mundo Bizarro. If you’re still standing by 3am and make it to Podesta or Club Niceto nightclubs, and finish off the morning at La Conzuelo for an after-party.
