Esplendor El Calafate
If you have visited the Iguazu falls, then you must see the glaciers. Both feature on the list of natural wonders of the world, but if pressed, we would take the glaciers over the falls. The world’s only advancing glacier, the Perito Moreno, will make your jaw drop for an embarrassingly long time. It is unforgettable. The glaciers are a 45-minute drive away from El Calafate, where the hotels are located.
El Calafate’s first design hotel, the Esplendor, was unveiled in late 2006 and follows on from its stylish sister back in Buenos Aires. With views over Lago Argentino, this is the most striking position in what is an otherwise barren landscape.
The project was designed by Mauro Bernardini and Cecilia Timossi, who have provided 57 maroon-and-chocolate coloured rooms in the Esplendor’s slick minimalist style, but have chucked a bed rug into the equation, given the chilly surroundings. The sitting room is a playful mess of furniture with stunning views of the lake. Splendid.
