Tierra del Fuego
In three and a half hours from Buenos Aires you can be at the end of the world. Tierra del Fuego, which means ‘Land of Fire’, is a 28,476 square mile archipelago separated from the southernmost tip of South American mainland by the Strait of Magellan (Ferdinand Magellan was the first European to navigate the strait in 1520).
The tip of Tierra del Fuego is also known as Cape Horn, famous for claiming many a sailor’s life. The primitive inhabitants of Tierra del Fuego were the Yamanas. In 1830, Robert Fitzroy took four natives of the area back to the King and Queen in England, where they became famous. Charles Darwin later returned to the islands on the Beagle. Tierra del Fuego is a must-see for the complete Argentinan experience. Consider popping down to Ushuaia after a trip to the glacier.
