Hg2 : The Hedonist

Rick’s Cafe Americain

In a century-old Victorian building on a little road laden with small eateries, this is one of the most relaxed lounges in Cape Town, a laid-back venue with many nooks and crannies, each of its spaces with a slightly different atmosphere to meet your mood. There’s some attempt to capture Casablanca-a film most of the clientele will never have seen-although it’s most definitely a slightly hipped up version of the world inhabited by Rick Blaine and Ilsa Lund. Relax on the roadside terrace-a great place to check out passing pedestrians heading to and from nearby Kloof Street. Or head upstairs into the cosy, intimate, and cushioned loft-perhaps the most romantic of Rick’s spaces, which opens on to a breezy terrace that works best on a summery day. Food here includes obvious allusions to Moroccan fare, but is perhaps a bit too global to be taken seriously; the tapas selection includes excellent chilli poppers, however. Incidentally, this is one of the few places in Cape Town that serves non-alcoholic beers, and they have a premium South African beer, Jack Black, available on tap. A good selection of wines is available, and cocktails are traditional.
