Beefcakes
Possibly the campest of all cafes in Cape Town. There’s entertainment a-plenty in this Miami-styled diner, both on the extremely camp (even homoerotic) menu and occasionally on the stage; the live drag act can be a pretty provocative accompaniment to a Buffy the Hamburger Slayer burger, especially in a room full of whooping and cheering gay men. And with a pink piano, pink flamingo wall art, and a bevy of spectacularly fit waiters wearing tight pink aprons, there’s no mistaking that this is a flamboyantly gay restaurant – the beefy burgers aren’t meant to be butch at all, and desserts are listed under the heading ‘Happy Endings’. While neither the Greek God nor the Beach Boy burgers are likely to be as satisfying as they sound, there’s enough eye-candy doing the rounds to make a session here an amusing prelude to a night of dancing at nearby Bronx or Crew, or more drinks in the Smoke and Mirrors bar downstairs.
