Although we still love the original espresso bar over in the heart of the CBD, Cape Town’s coolest caffeine fix has shifted to this more spacious outpost of Deluxe in an über-gritty semi-industrial space tucked away on Roodehek Street in the feisty Fringe precinct (formerly known as East City). Not only will you find the finest espresso-based coffee at the city’s most generous price, but Judd Francis and Carl Wessels have assembled a team of expert baristas rich with personality, skateboarder individuality and armloads of tattoos.
Sitting down here is like a return to the comfort of the womb—but with a better soundtrack and the life-affirming aroma of roasting coffee beans. What they do, they do properly—and they only do coffee. But shacking up with Deluxe are The Bitches’ Tits and Mucky Mary’s Hubcaps, a collaborative eatery for on-the-go cheapskates, victims of full-night partying, and other urbanistas looking for inexpensive-but-filling sandwiches, salads, all-day breakfasts—and edible “hubcaps,” of course.
At night, the space transforms into The Dog’s Bollocks, proffering insanely good burgers. Incidentally, there is now also a branch of Deluxe in the Winelands town of Franschhoek (19 Huguenot Road; +27 82 727 2187), and the roastery has recently partnered with Brew Coffeeworks in Istanbul (+90 212 512 1986).
