Jason / The Hatch
It’s a bakery. It’s a café. It’s a daytime social hotspot in masculine hues and raw, no-nonsense wood presided over by the one and only Jason Lilley—aka Captain Bread. Apparently he’s up way before the crack of dawn dreaming up gourmet combinations for his addicted fans, with whom he’s frequently seen shooting the breeze and plotting his next booze-and-grub evening soiree here at Jason, his eponymous bakery.
Once a hole-in-the-wall counter shop plying delicious lunch-fixes to famished office workers, Jason is now amongst the city’s most beloved institutions and one of the most popular bakeries in Cape Town. Jason is especially famed for the novelty of the baker’s #kickasspies, which are plied as take-aways through a hole-in-the-wall, now calling itself The Hatch (look for the mob of hungry Capetonians). While early birds gather at Jason to sit-down for their dose of Deluxe coffee with side orders of the legendary bacon croissant, it really gets crazy over lunch, when fresh-from-the-oven breads are stuffed with scrumptious novelty fillings to create scene-stealing sandwiches. The end-of-week work crowd gathers Friday evenings for imaginative tapas accompanied by craft beer and G&T sessions designed to quench unquenchable thirsts.
