Hg2 : The Hedonist

If Cape Town cafes are not dynamic enough for you, head to the city’s most popular food market, where the loveliest-of-lovely Capetonians feast on nibbles from the city’s most delicious-looking food stalls, operated by farmers, butchers, mongers, bakers, grocers and local celebrity chefs taking time out from their restaurant kitchens. So, grab a platter of freshly shucked West Coast oysters (served with sparkling wine), steak rolls prepared by one or two of the city’s top chefs, smoothies blended from all kinds of restorative berries, homebaked pies, unusual pizzas and ravishing assortments of dips, tapenades, and pestos, with lots of delicious breads that were whipped out the oven at the crack of dawn… And you’re not even a third of the way through. Part of the revitalisation of grungy Woodstock, the market was started in 2006 by entrepreneurs Justin Rhodes and Cameron Munro; they’ve signed up over 100 top-end traders to keep us flocking to this imaginatively reinvented Victorian warehouse (the disused Old Biscuit Mill) adjacent are some fantastic shops (see Shop). You can eat while you browse, or there are plenty of large communal tables with the day’s papers and large bowls of flowers.
