Hg2 : The Hedonist

Origin

Unlike many other cafes in Cape Town, this one’s really about those heavenly toasted beans. It’s possible to get high on the aroma alone as you step inside this industrial coffee nirvana, with its wooden troughs and sacks laden with brown beans. Tucked into a re-imagined tobacco warehouse just around the corner from the Cape Quarter, this is probably Cape Town’s most serious coffee stop – you can tell the baristas all know their stuff (and drink it, too). Neatly coiffured, they appear forever hard at work, dusting and polishing their equipment, making up coffee bean parcels, and extracting fresh brews for a mix of just-off-the-beach bunnies and serious-minded business folk. In a glass-walled sanctuary at the back of the ground-floor coffee shop is Nigiro Tea House (www.nigiro.co.za) something like a large, sublime fish tank where the combustible energy of Origin (which is Nigiro backwards, get it?) is left at the door in favour of a totally different fragrant atmosphere somewhat reminiscent of a Japanese tea garden, with the occasional Japanese tea ceremony held here within the brick warehouse. Food is served upstairs, in the open courtyard.
