Just in case you needed a reminder that coffee is what cafes in Cape Town (and the rest of the world) should be about. Despite the overt cheekiness of its branding – with plenty of hyperbolic allusions to coffee as a religious experience – David Donde really is the city’s original coffee innovator. The entrepreneurial spirit who co-founded Origin, he also brought the international barista championships to South Africa and trained the two-consecutive-year winner. Conveniently located alongside the intersection of Cape Town’s new walkway and bicycle route connecting the city with Green Point, this latest is a small, experimental project that aims to veer away from Vida and Origin’s more clique-driven focus on lifestyle, with a modern, stripped down interior – part of the new Prestwich Memorial – featuring just a few prefab tables and chairs (specially designed by Cape Town’s Biblioteq). The main focus is on the immaculately-packaged (all-white and glossy) coffee that David blends on-site, as well as his vintage, reconditioned Probat roasting machine, and brand new Jet-Stream espresso maker – apparently the world’s most sophisticated coffee- extraction technology. To go with your cup of Donde’s Chaos or the Resurrection Blend (strong enough, apparently, to resuscitate those who stupidly drank the Kool Aid), there’s a small selection of wraps, pita-style mini-burgers, and confectionary.
