Hg2 : The Hedonist

Mother City Queer Project

The biggest event of Cape Town nightlife: steadily approaching it’s 20th anniversary, MCQP is also the biggest costume ball on the continent, with many die-hard fans and party animals ascending on the Mother City from all over the world just to be here. It’s a gigantic celebration of queer identity and also a chance for anyone and everyone to get together for a night of unhinged fun, be it in spandex, sequined leather, or nothing more than a tassled cowboy hat. With at least three dancefloors, some dynamite DJs (in multiple genres – from cheesy commercial house to harder electro and even some experimental sets ranging from minimal to tech house), and a crowd of seemingly possessed party bunnies, this is a huge event where inhibitions get tossed to the wind for one extraordinary night of dress-up fun. To prepare for the mayhem, a sprawling venue is dolled up for the event, and there are bars, food outlets, and all kinds of interesting people to bump, er, heads with. You’re meant to team up with a group of friends, co-ordinate your outfits and prove that you’ve gone in the spirit of the theme’s brief – be it disguising yourselves as a posse of Size Queens or coming as a bunch of Extra-Large Cucumbers, all bets are off when it comes to choosing your costume for the night – just remember that you’ll need to move in it, and dancing is essential, too. Dressing down, revealing as much flesh and as much bulge as you can muster, is considered fine form, so feel free to unleash your inner exhibitionist.
