Hg2 : The Hedonist

Dock House

Gazing at the unadorned Victorian-era exterior of the former Harbour Master’s residence overlooking the Waterfront (and judging by the appearance of other boutique hotels in Cape Town) you’d never guess there were rooms for rent. Inside, too, the ambience is that of a private home where you’re waited on by a pleasant, idiosyncratic staff dressed in long Indian-style kurta tunics. The unadorned exterior and bare carpet-like lawn only heighten the quaint Rococo impact of the rooms, all six of them dressed up in an appealing version of contemporary mock-baroque that is neither too heavy on the frills nor too pared down to suggest any lack of effort. The muted colour palette shows up the glittery chandeliers and silken drapes, whilst the original architectural details-vintage plasterwork and fireplaces-are a great contrast to the state-of-the-art bathrooms, modern art collection, and technological enhancements. It’s all very personal, from the complimentary mini-bar (pre-stocked to your desire) to a spa that’ll stay open late should you require after-hours pampering. There are occasional setbacks-ground floor rooms are hounded by early morning noise by the staff, and they sometimes get things wrong-but on the whole, this is an exercise in class.
