La Colombe’s bold flavours and exquisite presentation make it one of the finest restaurants in Cape Town. Suffice it to say that it is considered one of the world’s Top 50 restaurants, and rated number one in the country by a local panel that seems to care about such things. And it is true that La Colombe should be experienced at least once during your time in Cape Town. Whether you’re seated beneath the vine canopy on the terrace, or indoors soaking up the country kitchen atmosphere, Luke Dale-Roberts’ (who filled the enormous shoes of Franck Dangereux; see The Foodbarn) creations are exemplary. British-born, classically trained in the French style, and a veteran of such luminary London outfits as The Loft and Sugar Club, his years in Asia did much to cultivate his talent for fusion. A chalked-up a la carte menu vies with a blowout seven-course set menu that evolves according to Luke’s creative whims (right now he’s dreaming up something with pine-smoked veal tongue-maybe with a touch of veal offal). The best time to try out new creations is after March; during the summer season he tends to be a tad creatively drained when everyone-from celebrity chefs to international culinary journalists-wants a taste of La Colombe.
